Wysong use the slogan “The thinking person’s pet food”, with a company goal to teach pet owners what’s right for feeding their carnivorous dogs and cats. Yep, that’s right, they view dogs as carnivorous pets, not grain disposal units.
Wysong dry dog foods are “designed to mimic the archetypal canine diet”, which as far as I’m concerned is a very good start.
In our Wysong dog food review we’ll take a look at the original and most popular formula “Adult”. What the marketing says
Wysong dog food has been around a long time. Since 1979 in fact. Testament to owner Dr. Wysong, the food has stood the test of time, and the family owned company has branched out to provide a range of dry, wet, and raw foods for dogs, cats, and even ferrets (carnivorous little beasts).
The company views pet nutrition as a serious health matter, and their products are primarily designed for the health of your pets. That’s great, and more unusual than you would like to know.
All Wysong’s dry dog foods boast something called an “industry-leading micronutrient spectrum”, which is getting a little markety for me, so lets delve in and see what the ingredients really say.
What the label really says
We’ll start with the guaranteed analysis, and it’s great to see a whopping 30% protein. I consider anything less mediocre, especially as our dogs thrive on protein and fat. What’s even better is we find three meat ingredients in the top six, and the only other protein-rich ingredient is peas. That assures us your dog is getting the best bio-available protein from meat rather than something cheap like corn.
The meats in this formula are a combination of chicken, and chicken meal and turkey meal as more dense protein sources. The fat percentage of 15 is also respectable, in this formula being chicken fat.
Wysong Adult is a grain-based formula. That’s not a bad thing if good grains are included, and in this case we find oat groats and brown rice as two of the best inclusions in a dog food. I estimate the carbohydrates to be 37% which is really good, and it definitely looks like the food is more meat-focused than grains.
We’ve already covered the main ingredients which are a really nice balance, but if you take a look at the ingredients list below you’ll see many many more. I’ll have to summarise as going into each ingredient in detail will make this a novel, and probably a bore, but all are well considered ingredients beneficial to your dog.
We find flaxseeds as a source of omega 3 & 6 for heart health and glossy coat, a wide range of vitamins and minerals, superfoods like kale, kelp, spinach, carrots, and apples. It’s also a tell-tale sign of a good product to see montmorillonite clay which is used in more natural foods to avoid the use of chemical preservatives and antioxidants.
